Fourth grade students will be the Choir for Joseph at Weathervane

Mrs. Heffernan's entire fourth grade class has been learning the songs to the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat to perform at Weathervane Theatre. They will perform in 4 of the shows in the week of November 24th. This is Weathervane's 10th year to do the show, and are very excited to present it to the community this holday season. The children will be on stage for the entire show, and sing in almost every song in the show along with the cast and main characters. We are especially proud because we found out one of the main singers, the narrator, is a former Miller South graduate.

Veteran's Day - War and Peace: A Child's Vision

A students in room 115 had the privilege of participating in a ceremony of honor for those that have served in the armed services. With the help of Mrs. Yingling, the students created four banners in the style of Henri Matisse. They then worked with Nikki Robinson, from the Wick Poetry Center in Kent and created a group poem entitled Our Que Huong. Que huong is a traditional saying in Viet Nam that figuratively asks, "Where are you from?" A group of students presented their group poem on Sunday night along with a number of veterans from current and past wars. Their artwork will hang at the First Congregational Church in Tallmadge until December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. Take a look at the photos of their artwork and listen to the presentation of their group poem.
The students sincerely want to thank those that currently serve or have served our country to make this world a better place.

Kennedy, Sabrina, and Hannah P search for information while in the corn maze. Even in cold weather, these girls are able to do research.
The kids really enjoyed sliding down into the pit of corn. Wow, how many turns can we have Mrs. Heff?
Tyring their luck a the Spud Shooter at Ramseyer Farms, Claire and Julia from Room 107, aim for distance.
Mrs. Heffernan's 4th grade class spent the day at Ramseyer Farms in Wooster. The worked their way through an 8 acre corn maze that is in the shape of Ohio. Throughout the maze, they needed to search for hidden answers for questions that related to Ohio history and Geography. Ramseyer farms is a working potato farm, but also has crops such as soybean, wheat, and pumpkin.

Students were able to visit farm animals while at Ramseyer farm. Kayla Whitley, from Room 107, feeds the baby goats.

Mrs. G's Class Hiking Spree #4

What could be more fun than hiking and exercising at the same time?
Try the Sand Run Parcours and you can hike a mile and complete 20 physical fitness activities along the way. The students in Mrs. G's class loved the challenge of making par on each exercise. The Sand Run trail completion means they are half-way through the Hiking Spree for 2009.
Watch for updates in the near future.

Hiking Spree #3 - A Day in the Rain

Mrs. G's students are working hard at completing the Metro Parks Hiking Spree. On Wednesday, September 30th, they conquered two hikes in the cold and in the rain. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow will stop this great bunch of Miller South students.

Cartographers Create in Mrs. G's Class

The students in Mrs. G's class have spent the last few weeks learning about maps. They culminated this learning by creating their own Maps of Imagination.
Each student chose a theme and then designed maps around that theme. Every map included a title, a map key, a compass rose, a map scale, and a grid to help locate places. Interesting map themes were magic, books, fashion, basketball, and frogs. The students used a rubric to earn their best scores. Their maps will be on display outside room 115. Stop by and enjoy.

Mrs. Galambos' Class Inventors

The students in room 115 are real entrepreneurs! They each invented a new product and then created advertisements to try to sell their product to the public. Some students made a print ad, some performed commercials for the class, while others videotaped their commercials and played them for us. Some inventions made life easier for others. For example, Mason created The Sleep Suit, a blanket and pillow combination you could take anywhere you wanted to be comfortable. Molly's idea could make life easier for every Miller South student. She created Ident-a-Lock - a lock for your locker that opened with your finger print. Cool idea and one that most likely will happen sometime in the near future! Mary Owens invented a hair dye that changed with your moods - like a mood ring for your hair. :) Enjoy a sample of some of the wonderful work these talented fourth graders created. Be sure to watch Kevin's Endless Potato Chips. He has a future on the infomercial circuit!

Wick Poetry Program

The students in Mrs. G.'s class are going to be working with the Wick Poetry Center from Kent State University again this year. We will be writing poetry and sharing our writing each week. The theme for the year is PEACE. This fits great with our Miller South theme of Make the World a Better Place. Last week we wrote poems about "In My America". Watch our video to see some of the favorite lines written by the fourth graders.

Hiking Spree #1

Mrs. G.'s class have started this year's Metro Parks hiking spree. The whole class hiked the Red Wing Trail at Firestone Park on Wednesday. We were joined by 8 of our parents who served as drivers or hikers. The students completed a visual scavenger hunt created by Mrs. G. They were awesome observers! Enjoy the news cast created by Grace Thanasiu and Essence Cain. Tune in next week for our next hiking adventure!
